Seaside Furniture FAQ's Site Map

Cresent Manufacturing Company, based in Gallatin, Tennessee, has a rich history spanning over fifty years in the furniture business. Our roots lie in retail furniture-Cresent Furniture was founded by Charles R. Tomkins, Jr. in 1945 as a retail furniture store in Gallatin. After several years of searching for affordable, high quality solid wood furniture for his customers, he set out to manufacture just the kind of furniture that his customers deserved.

Tomkins hired a few local woodworkers and craftsmen and began producing a few solid cherry and maple designs-often crisscrossing the eastern United States with a sample dresser in the back of his station wagon, calling on furniture stores to persuade them that quality furniture was being produced in this sleepy little town in the Appalachian foothills of Tennessee.

Steady growth ensued, as the Cresent name became synonymous with high-quality 18th Century reproductions at fair prices. As the business grew, we added solid mahogany designs to the collection, offering value-conscious consumers the beauty and tradition of solid mahogany Colonial furniture that had previously been the province of the high-end furniture manufacturers. Over the last ten years, Cresent's line of furniture has grown to include Art Deco Contemporary, neo-classical modern, 18th Century traditional, Shaker and transitional designs. We have also added several collections using Cherry and Walnut veneers at more affordable price points.

Today, the Cresent tradition continues in the hands of the second and third generations of family ownership. We have grown from a small shop with a few craftsmen into a multi-million dollar business with facilities in Gallatin, TN and throughout Asia. Cresent furniture is distributed throughout the United States and Canada by a network of carefully selected independent dealers. But while the size and scope of the business has changed, one thing has not-our commitment to produce well made products at the best value in the furniture industry. We in the Cresent family strive every day to meet this commitment, and we think that once you see our furniture, you will appreciate the results.

CRESENT is celebrating 60 years as a family business and would like to introduce you to our company and the home furnishings that we offer. Our designs range from transitional to Art Deco and include updated traditional and contemporary influences.

As a family business that manufactures home furnishings, we are aware of the threats to the environment that our industry inflicts. Our family is working to expand our sustainable practices and is committed to continuous improvement in all of our activities. Specifically, we are working with our finish suppliers to use coatings with low emissions (VOCs and VHAPs) and our lumber vendors to ensure an increasing percentage of sustainably forested timber is available for our products.
